I cannot believe that in this day and age there are still web designers out there building sites without using H tags. I have come across 3 sites in the last 24 hours that have completely ignored what is now common practice.
The importance and relevance of using heading tags when building a website and ensuring it is set up for search engine optimisation cannot be underestimated. Choose to ignore them and it is you the client that will suffer as a result.
Heading tags not only help with the organization of your design, but they help with the search engine optimization of your site as well. Heading tags go from H1 to H6.
How do they work?
The H1 tag is the heading of your page. H2 tags are for additional keywords that are not as important as the H1. The H2 tags can also be used to support and enhance the chosen H1 tag. H3 tags a – however they are not to be used for the title of the page. H4, H5, and H6 tags are not as important as the first three and are generally used as sub-headings in content.
Why does this help SEO?
Your H1 is the most important of the six tags and as such should be placed at the top ofyour content. This is to ensure that visitors to your site can quickly identify what the page is about. For the search engine robots this is important because they will see this tag before they crawl any other part of the page.
Next you will choose your page subheading and use your H2 tag for this. H3 tags are not as important as H1 and H2 tags and are the equivalent of bold text.
Search engines like to see the first three heading tags because it helps them understand what the pages of your site are about.
The most important tag is the Title tag in the heading section of the page. Where possible your H1 tag should attempt to mirror this.
It is important to remember that you should only use the H1 and H2 tags once on a page. H3 to H6 can be used multiple times. The reason you only use H1 and H2 tags once is because they carry so much weight to overuse them would be seen as spamming by the search engines – a big no no.
As a web designer and a search engine optimisation company, it is imperative that I stay on top of industry trends and developments and continually design not only visually attractive and functional sites but also design and build websites that are search engine ready.
